Combat Push Hands > I Liq Chuan

I Liq Chuan is a family system of Kung Fu developed by Grandmaster Chin Lik Keong. Master Sam F.S. Chin the son of grandmaster Chin continues to evolve and broaden the scope of I liq Chuan to what is seen today. Outwardly a very simple appearing system, I liq Chuan is internally very sophisticated, and subtle, while maintaining a highly effective combat ability.

In my opinion I Liq Chuan is a distillation of any circular martial art technique. What is meant by this is; any circular technique can be broken down into a combination of eight circles. I Liq Chuan disseminates these techniques to there most simplistic components, and then builds a system utilizing these components. In other words the system is based on eight circles used in a three dimensional plane. This structure allows for the application of any type of circular application.

However, I Liq Chuan does not use choreographed techniques; rather it trains to develop physical sensitivity and sensorial awareness of the mind, and energies of the body and environment. These abilities develop over time as the mind becomes more present in the moment through training. The ability to be present in a combat situation allows a practitioner to sense and interpret exactly what an opponent is doing and to respond accordingly.

This is very different than most styles of combat which rely on reflex, or habit patterns based on past experience. I Liq Chuan also begins training formlessness in its combat training very early on. High quality martial arts systems all aspire to formlessness in combat, but it is usually only after years or decades of diligent practice that this is achieved, if at all. This state of combat is achieved only when the mind is in present time, and has become so quiet it is empty. The mind is then aware and receptive, and able to recognize things as they are.

This in combination with the sensitivity and awareness training, and the sticking and merging abilities, help to evolve an inner feel which is expressed through external movement.

About I-Liq Chuan: Description modified from material on www.iliqchuan.org. About Master Sam F.S. Chin:

I-Liq Chuan (roughly translated as "mind-body fist") is an art of cultivating consciousness based on Tai Chi and Chan (Zen) principles of non-assertions, non-resistance, harmony of yin and yang, oneness, and the present moment. As a system of kung fu, I-Liq Chuan emphasizes the development of internal power through mental attitude and awareness. The training develops sticking and merging abilities, circular spiral energy, Chin Na (locking), Fa Jing (projecting force), Chi Kung, and most importantly, integration of the mind's complete awareness in the present moment. I-Liq Chuan trains the ability to sense the opponent's intention through awareness and to redirect the force and use it against the opponent or incorporate the use of Fa Jing.

Master Sam F.S. Chin is the co-founder and head instructor of I-Liq Chuan. Master Chin was trained in the martial arts since childhood by his father and I-Liq Chuan founder Lik Keong Chin. He was a state heavy weight kickboxing champion in 1978. During the 1980's, Master Chin won numerous push hand championships. Master Chin has been teaching for 27 years and has conducted seminars and workshops internationally in Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Hungary, Russia, Poland, Germany and the United States. Master Chin has been recognized by the USA Wushu Kung-Fu Federation as a Hall of Fame Outstanding Master.
